Taking flying leaps into the unknown

What an intense day!

3 weeks ago I had a meeting with Prof Stephen Zhang a professor at University Catolica in Santiago. He is an Important prof in the faculty of innovation and entrepreneurship. A friend of mine Jean made the introduction. My aim of the meeting was to learn more about the startup scene in Chile.

Stephen introduced me to Geek Fantasy Camp. A startup competition and reality TV show (yes TV show) organised by the university. He said I should apply with an idea as it’s a great way to meet people…. I had 48 hours to think of a startup idea and fill out the very lengthy pitch document that required c. 20 mini essays and an online video pitch. Sure enough I rolled up my sleeves stayed up and pitched Fundacity.com. I also started leveraging my networks to find a capable and passionate tech co-founder…in case I actually got selected. I asked everyone I knew in Santiago and I even walked around the university IT faculty stalking Geeks :). In the end I was introduced to Diego. He is a very driven and capable tech guy who specialises in web design. He likes the idea of Fundacity and we agreed to work together.

It was already Friday 19 Oct, the cut-off day for successful applicant announcements, and we were still not contacted. Oh well we said. After accepting the rejection, unexpectedly, a final batch of entrants were released. Fundacity was there!

Today, 23 Oct we had our first day at the competition. It was a really interesting day with lots of ups and downs. Notable achievements for me was that I pitched my idea in front of 150 smart geeks, investors and rolling cameras. It was an exhilarating experience. The week continues….who knows what lies ahead.
